Back-door Cut

10 12 05

Attacking the basket is not so difficult. The offensive plays (the ones which work better) are based upon cuts: to the basket, to the ball, away from the ball …

The back-door cut is a cut to the basket. The player should make a move toward the ball, so the player’s defender follow him/her; immediatly the player points his/her advanced foot - the nearest to the sideline: if you are on the left part of the floor, you should point firmly your right foot, and viceversa - on the floor and changes direction (the V cut), now going to the basket, behind the back of the defender.

The ball should be passed quickly, because now the attack has gained some free space; the defence will make counter-moves, maybe “help&recover“, and this tactic could be an advantage for the team attacking: all the defense will be soon out of place!

The back-door cut is part of the best basketball, an essential style that comprehends easy plays like the one we in Italy call “dai e vai” (which literally translates as “give and go“); a part of basketball that is disappearing.
